China’s natural gas consumption has been increasing speedily. According to the data from ASIACHEM, from 2000 to 2009 China’s average annual natural gas consumption grew by nearly 16% and output increased by about 13% over to the same period. In 2009 China’s natural gas demand reached 88.7 billion cubic meters. But China is short of natural gas resources, which constrains the production and application and the annual “Winter Gas Shortage” also impact the economy growth. Statistics shows that China natural gas import reached 7.8 billion Nm3 in 2009 and which will be 300 billion Nm3 in 2010. It is predicted that in 2015 the imported natural gas will account for 30% of total consumption and this data will be 50% by 2020. China will face the challenge of natural supply safety as the increase of both demand and import. Coal-to-SNG (substitute or synthetic natural gas) is based on the China’s resources features, through the efficient coal conversion to produce clean energy products and then delivered to target market by pipelines, have great market advantage. Coal to SNG, with proven technology and high efficient energy conversion and low water consumption, is one of the most important directions of new coal chemical industry and has been listed as demonstration in China’s petrochemical reviving and stimulus package. China’s west-to-east gas pipeline projects provide good utilities condition for coal to SNG products transportation and distribution. Natural gas price mechanism reform will further enhance the SNG competitiveness. With the relatively abundant coal resource, a appropriate development of coal to SNG can to be the beneficial and essential supplementary for the natural gas, which will help to optimize energy consumption structure and promote China’s clean coal utilization.
